How to Hire a Washington DUI Lawyer

Drinking under the influence is a serious offense. If you are convicted of a DUI, you could incur fines, lose your driver’s license, or even be sent to jail. At a minimum, you would have to attend classes. If you’ve been charged with a DUI, you will need the help of an experienced Washington DUI defense lawyer. Hiring the right lawyer is critical.

If you've never before hired an attorney, you may not know where to begin. This article will walk you through the process of hiring a Washington drunk driving lawyer.

Finding & Hiring a Washington DUI Attorney

To begin, you want to gather the names of attorneys who are qualified to handle your case. There are several ways to do that.

Ask friends, family or business associates if they or someone they know has used a DUI attorney in the past. Personal recommendations are always valuable.

If you don't feel comfortable talking to friends about your DUI, can put you in touch with a Washington DUI lawyer. To begin, fill out the form on this website or call 1-877-913-7222. Whether you live in Seattle, Spokane or elsewhere in Washington, we'll connect you with at least one DUI lawyer in your area. You can contact the lawyer directly, or the lawyer will call you within two business days.

Meeting with a Lawyer

Once you’ve found at least one DUI attorney to potentially handle your case, schedule an initial consultation with each lawyer. This preliminary meeting allows you to get to know the lawyer and familiarize him with your case. Your goal at the meeting should be to decide whether you want to hire the lawyer. Most initial consultations are free, but it’s always safer to ask if they charge a fee when making an appointment.

The initial consultation with a lawyer is the most critical step when choosing the right DUI lawyer.

Come prepared for these meetings. Bring your arrest report, court documents, names and contact information of witnesses to your arrest, and other relevant information. The more information a lawyer has, the more information he can provide you during the meeting.

Don’t be afraid to ask the lawyer questions about your case and the lawyer's experience. Key questions to ask a lawyer about DUI cases include:

  • How many DUI court cases have you tried?
  • Will you be my attorney, or will other members of your practice be handling my case?
  • How will you keep me informed about my case’s status?
  • How often can I expect to hear from you?
  • What strategy would you recommend for handling my case?
  • What are my chances of being found not guilty?
  • What is your billing rate? Do you charge an hourly rate or a flat fee?
    • What types of court-related costs will I have to pay?

In addition, ask for references. References could be a deciding factor if your meetings with lawyers don’t leave you with a clear impression about whom to hire.

Make sure to take notes during the meeting, or write down your impression of the lawyer after the meeting while the visit is still fresh in your mind. Did the lawyer listen well? Did the attorney understand your problem? Could the lawyer explain DUI laws as they apply in Washington State? Did he speak about the law in a way that’s easy to understand? Do you think the lawyer will work on the case cost effectively?

After you’ve met with at least one attorney, review each lawyer’s qualifications. Ask yourself if the lawyer had a good grasp of your case. Did he sufficiently answer all of your questions? Do you think that he could help you be found not guilty or negotiate a lower charge?

If you’re still struggling to pick a particular attorney to handle your case, call the references. Speak to former clients and ask them about their working relationship with the lawyer. Were they completely satisfied with their experience? What were the pros and cons of working with this particular lawyer? Would they work with him again?

Remember, don’t be afraid to ask questions before hiring a DUI attorney. You will be much more satisfied and comfortable with your choice in the long-run if you do.
