Nebraska Traffic Violations

Traffic violations are added onto your Nebraska driving record even if the violations happen out of state. The state may suspend your license if you reach too many points. If you disagree with a traffic ticket, a Nebraska traffic violations attorney may be able help.

Penalties for Speeding

Speeding and other moving violations may not be criminal offenses. But you face fines and points on your driving record. The penalty depends on the offense.

One point will be added if you are caught speeding up to 10 mph over the limit on a state highway. It goes up to two points for 10 to 15 mph over the limit, three points for over 15 mph, and four points for over 35 mph.

Fines for speeding range from $10 to $300 depending on your speed. They are:

  • $10 for 1 to 5 mph over the authorized speed limit
  • $25 for 6 to 10 mph over
  • $75 for 11 to 15 mph over
  • $125 for 16 to 20 mph over
  • $200 for 21 to 35 mph over
  • $300 for more than 35 mph over

These fines do not include court costs.

Once you reach 12 points, the state can suspend your license. If you have not yet reached 12 points, you may attend a driver education and training course to get a two-point credit added onto your record.

What to Do if You Get a Traffic Ticket

Not paying your traffic ticket will result in loss of your driver's license. If you disagree with a ticket, you can fight it in court.

Write down notes about traffic conditions, traffic signs, where the officer flagged you down, and any other evidence you can. do this as soon as the officer leaves. Get the help of a traffic violations attorney.

An attorney can request the officer's copy of the traffic ticket or a copy of the officer's training records. If you have a good defense, the lawyer may be able to get your fine and points reduced.
